Why You Need a Vacation This Summer

Working too hard to take a break this summer? If you don’t have a vacation planned, you may want to reconsider. Vacations aren’t just good for your overall wellbeing. Forgoing them can actually be detrimental to your health.

One study found a link between skipping vacation and heart attacks. Women who don’t take vacations are 50% more likely to have a heart attack than those who do, and men are 30% more likely.

If you’re feeling stressed at work, you may be tempted to just push through it, hold off on the vacation for another month, then another month, until you just don’t take one. But data suggests that’s the wrong thing to do. Leisure activities have been proven to lower stress hormones and blood pressure.

Don’t have time for a long vacation but might be able to swing a 3-day weekend? Go for it. One study found that the more shorter vacations you take, the happier you’ll be.

And if you’re worried about work piling up while you’re gone, consider this: By taking a break, you let your brain enter its daydreaming mode. The shift from focusing on tasks allows you some of your greatest moments of creativity, insight and problem solving. So a quick vacation can actually make you better able to do the work you left behind.

Do something good for yourself this summer and give yourself the break you deserve.
