Why Do I Have to Wear a Retainer?

Whether you’ve used traditional braces or invisible aligners, for any orthodontic treatment that involves moving your teeth, you will need to wear a retainer to keep your smile in line once everything’s said and done. For SmileDirectClub customers, you’ll wear your retainer all day and night, except when eating and drinking—just like your aligners. After 2 weeks, you can switch to wearing it only at night.

How invisible aligners work

Your teeth are held in place by ligaments, and the bone surrounding those ligaments is somewhat pliable, which is what allows orthodontic treatment to work. Invisible aligners move your teeth by applying pressure that shifts your teeth slowly over time. As your ligaments shift, the bone reforms around the teeth, creating fresh bone and removing old cells.

Once your teeth are in their final positions, it takes the bone time to fully reform. Unfortunately, your teeth remember where they were before and want to move back to their old positions. By wearing your retainer, you give your bones and ligaments time to adjust to the new positioning and allow your teeth time to stabilize, keeping your smile in line.

Why do I have to continue to wear a retainer?

Even after your teeth have stabilized, we recommend you continue to wear your retainers while you sleep. As we get older, our teeth are constantly moving, slowly shifting forward and inward. By continuing to wear your retainer, you can prevent this movement and keep your smile straight.
