If you’ve been on Instagram at all recently, you’ve likely seen the newest health craze: celery juicing. But how does drinking all that celery juice affect your teeth?
We asked SmileDirectClub’s chief clinical 0fficer, Dr. Jeffrey Sulitzer, to weigh in on what drinking celery juice on the reg means for your precious pearly whites.
“Juicing has been a popular dieting method for years. I have seen many patients take this approach to dieting, and it shows in their teeth,” Dr. Sulitzer says. “When you juice your fruits and veggies, such as celery, you are stripping them of their fiber. Drinking these juices, which contain high fructose levels, causes your tooth enamel to become exposed to tooth decay.” (Aka cavities.)
While the jury’s still out on the actual health and weight-loss benefits of drinking celery juice, Dr. S suggests munching on celery in its original, crunchy state.
“As you chew the celery, it helps to clean your teeth and massages your gums in the process,” he says. “All that chewing will also produce plenty of saliva to counteract the bacteria that is naturally present in your mouth.”
There you have it: If you want to incorporate more celery into your diet, stick to snacking on stalks instead of going straight to the juicer.
