The Amy Wilson you see beaming today is very different from the Amy Wilson of one year ago.
“There was always this voice in my head that was like, ‘Don’t smile. Cover your laugh,'” Amy says. “Even on my wedding day. I shouldn’t have been thinking, ‘Don’t smile so big.’ But that voice was trying to remind me not to smile.”
After years of listening to that voice and hiding her smile, Amy decided to do something about it. She began her SmileDirectClub journey in June 2017, and today her straight, bright smile has given her a whole new outlook and zest for life. “My very lovely parents gave me braces, and I did at one point have straight teeth,” Amy says. “And that didn’t last long at all. I never wore my retainer. My teeth shifted a little, and then they kept shifting.”
Amy graduated from Samford University in 2015 and got a job in marketing and advertising in Birmingham, Alabama. She and her husband, Ethan, got married the following year, and life was going well. Except her teeth still bothered her.
“I’m a young professional and consider myself an independent woman,” she says. “I was very embarrassed of my teeth. I would wake up in the morning and my first thought would be, ‘Oh, my teeth.'”
Amy recounts how much her teeth impacted her self-esteem, causing her to cover her laugh and ultimately to adopt what she calls an “awkward, fake closed-mouth smile” for a long time.
When Amy and Ethan moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, in the summer of 2017, she took a communications job at the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary. She also ramped up work for her Etsy shop, showcasing her creativity and successfully selling her unique and fun paper crafts. Amy decided it was time to improve her smile – and she used her Etsy money to do so.
She met with her orthodontist to discuss her teeth straightening options, but was quoted a price for invisible aligners that was outside her budget, plus a plan that would be 15 months in length.
“I was so upset because I wanted a solution, but I felt like that was not a good use of my money right then in life,” she says.
A friend told Amy about SmileDirectClub, and she almost thought it was too good to be true. (It’s not!) Amy went into a SmileShop for a free 3D scan; a few days later, she received her 3D smile plan and was able to see how her teeth would change month-by-month while wearing SmileDirectClub invisible aligners. In just 7 months, the aligners would fix her crowding issues and help straighten her teeth overall.
“My aunt is a dental hygienist, so I called her before I did SmileDirectClub,” Amy says. “My aunt talked to the dentist she works with and looked into it. She said there was no reason not to move forward.”
Although SmileDirectClub can be done completely remotely, every member is assigned a dentist or orthodontist licensed in their state who oversees their new smile and checks in with them every 90 days to make sure their teeth are moving according to plan. At-home doesn’t mean do-it-yourself. A doctor guides members each step of the way.
Amy loved being able to preview her new smile and excitedly joined SmileDirectClub. She received all her invisible aligners at-once that August, changing them according to schedule and wearing them faithfully for the next 7 months.
A tooth care kit – toothpaste, a toothbrush, flossers, lip balm, and her blurple invisible aligner case – was Amy’s constant companion and helped make wearing her aligners each day a cinch.
Amy had access to SmileDirectClub’s Customer Care team 23/7, as well as the Dental Team who’s available to talk through any questions. With the Smile Direct Club Members group on Facebook, she was able to receive helpful tips for wearing and cleaning her aligners. Seeing people wear their aligners and share their before and after photos was super helpful, too, she says.
“I live in Louisiana, so we did Mardi Gras. You eat and drink all day. It was nice to go to the Facebook group and read what people in similar situations did.”
Everyone in Amy’s life got involved in her smile transformation. She sent weekly updates to her friends, and they all texted her to congratulate her on her last day wearing her aligners. Her before and after photos speak for themselves; she even posted them to the Facebook group (garnering more than 450 likes!).
“I notice that I smile big now,” Amy says with a wide grin. “I don’t cover my mouth. I’m excited to smile!”
Her bright, bubbly personality is finally reflected through her smile.
“I’m able to smile and laugh the way that I actually feel, which is a big deal,” she says. “My confidence is through the roof. I’ve never smiled like this before. Now look at me go.”
